Tears in the Desert

(February 2 - 8:59 a.m.) Palm Springs has always been a magnet for those who retire and want a quieter and simpler life. There was a radio station that complemented their lifestyle, KWXY/fm. It was the soundtrack of those who liked their music simple and they referred to their favorite artists with just a first name – Frank, Bing, Tony, and Ella.

Thousands of World War II vets and their spouses were given a musical consistency for over four decades, that is, until last night. The plug was pulled on the long-time fm operation and the format will move to 1340AM in a complicated transaction with a number of moving pieces including the transfer of 104.7 from Palm Springs to Redlands in a deal orchestrated by Roy Laughlin. Dave Hull promised to turn out the lights at KWXY at midnight last night.

We returned to our weekend home in LaQuinta on to find our beloved WQXY was gone. My wife is a competitive ballroom dancer, and we both enjoy the "standards". We have become a society with limited appreciation of quality and very little class.

Pop music is nothing short of trash now, which is why I listen to either channel 4, 7 or 28 on the XM radio in my car.

Class & panache are not in style these days. The grammy awards were a good example of the de-evolution of music. Examine the lyrics of Beyonce's song of the year,(grammy award winning) & you realize we are in a post-literate society. Frank, Bobby D, Ella? Who needs these old icons? We have 50 cents, Jay-Z & Kid Rock to replace them. Why should anyone care about John Coltrane or Miles Davis? We have Moby & The Utah Saints.
In my career I played the CHR hits, punk rock, disco, & country. But I've never seen a time when pop music was in worse shape than today.
